Some friendships are born from a shared language of elegance.
This second conversation in the series offers exactly that: a relaxed yet thoughtful exchange between Stefano and Austin, owner of The Man’s Shop in Arlington, Texas. In this Stefano Cau style interview, the two explore a common passion for timeless menswear, authentic expression, and the subtle strength of well-made accessories.
Austin’s reflections on confidence, self-image, and personal style echo the same values behind Stefano Cau’s handmade silk ties and refined accessories crafted in Como with precision and purpose.
Because true elegance speaks through details, and real style tells a story.
What’s one essential piece every man should have in his wardrobe?
A well-cut navy suit. It’s the ultimate foundation, versatile, elegant, and never out of place.
How do you choose the perfect tie to complete your look? Do you have a favorite fabric or pattern?
It depends on what I want to express. Sometimes the tie makes the statement, other times it balances a bolder outfit. Silk is my go-to, but I appreciate texture too. And polka dots—they’ll always have a place in my heart.
What makes a tie truly stand out, in your opinion?
The fabric is everything. Even someone without a trained eye can tell when the cloth is wrong. Quality shows—always.
What first drew you to men’s fashion? Was there a moment or piece that made you fall in love with style?
Old movies. I can’t name just one, but films from the ’30s to the ’80s completely captivated me.
My interest in style really began during a difficult period I was bullied growing up and struggled with self-esteem and body image.
Seeing how well-dressed men carried themselves gave me something to aspire to. But I noticed how well-dressed men carried themselves and I wanted to feel that way, too.
Who inspires your style the most? Do you have any icons or sources of inspiration?
Honestly, a lot of people on Instagram—especially those who aren’t in the fashion industry. They bring such a fresh perspective. That said, my biggest inspirations are Fred Astaire and the illustrations of Lawrence Fellows.
What advice would you give someone starting to build a sartorial wardrobe?
Clothing is a language, it speaks before you do. So be honest with yourself about who you want to be and how you want to express that. Try different styles, take your time. It’s a journey, not a race.
If I had to recommend a core wardrobe, I’d include:
- A dark or medium navy single-breasted suit (peak lapels if possible)
- A white pinpoint spread-collar shirt
- A blue twill spread-collar shirt
- A white cotton or linen pocket square
- A navy tie (patterned or solid)
- Black oxfords
- Medium brown or chocolate bluchers
- White and black t-shirts
- Brown horsebit loafers
- A gingham check sport shirt
In your opinion, what sets Italian elegance apart from other international styles?
Passion. Italians put heart into everything art, food, friendship, clothes. They don’t rush; they take time. They tell stories through what they do, and they’re proud of that. You can see it in their clothing, it’s expressive, thoughtful, and personal.
Let’s talk details: how important are accessories like ties, cufflinks, or pocket squares in completing a look?
Accessories may not be functional, but they’re like spices in a recipe—they elevate the whole experience. A tie, a pocket square, a pair of cufflinks can take your look from good to memorable. Just don’t overdo it. Keep it tasteful.
Can you recall a specific moment when you felt truly impeccable in what you wore? What was the outfit?
I have a sport coat in a fine blue, cream, and brown houndstooth check with cream piping. I wore it with a blue-and-white striped shirt, a solid brown tie, blue windowpane trousers, and tan-and-brown spectators. No special event, just a random Tuesday when I felt like dressing a little more dandy.
What do you see in the future of men’s style? Which trends are you most excited about?
The future looks bright. I see people returning to more classic pieces, which I love. I’m especially excited to see fuller-cut trousers coming back, they add elegance and comfort in the best way.
